Spartan - Matching VAK Style on a telephone call.

I am curious to know any best practices in use to draw out a student's VAK style. So many of my conversations are mostly one way, although I can obviously pepper in questions soliciting feedback from the student: "How does that sound?", "What does that look like to you?", "Does this feel right?". Those types of questions are great and will resonate with the various VAK preferences throughout the interview. However, what I would like is a way to determine the student's preference, so I can adapt my delivery style throughout the entire conversation to keep the student engages ...

"Effective Branching Techniques and Understanding the Importance of The Gap" Webinar Question

Hi there,  When listening to this webinar, I noted the importance of open questions in both ascertaining the student's desired and present state and helping them to bridge that gap. I was curious if anyone has any tips or stories on balancing these with closed and clarifying questions to help fully understand the desired and present state and how to get from one to the other. In my experience, people are often willing to share their experiences when faced with an open question, but the responses can sometimes be tangential and get away from the information that ...

"Listening" Module Comment

In this module I noticed that the skills of "repeating, rephrasing, and reflecting" were mentioned. Having trained and worked as a clinical counselor prior to working in student services, these were basically some of our bread-and-butter tools and their value really can't be overstated in any communication-based work or setting. That being said, they can also impede communication if they're not done correctly or if the student feels that we're just parroting things back to them without really empathizing or moving with them towards an objective or problem resolution. Avoiding this takes time and practice, but it is ...

Power of Questions - Feedback and Take-Aways

Well.....if you don't ask the question (because you are afraid or  don't want to know the answer), how are you going to know who to help your student? Knowledge is power. Ask the question! We look forward to hearing your thoughts!

Compliance and Admissions

Last month, we hosted a live virtual training about compliance since the FTC had recently sent out a warning to many for-profit institutions.  If you weren't able to attend, make sure you check it out in the webinar library!  We had a compliance expert, Frank Galindo, leading the session and he shared a lot of great information.  Hoping to continue the conversation from that session here in the forum.  What types of compliance trainings do you find most valuable in your role? Is there something that you feel like could benefit you and your institution that is currently ...

Virtual Tour Experience

Hi everyone!  Last month, we hosted a live virtual training on virtual tours. If you didn't get a chance to attend it, check it out in the webinar library.  One of the things that we talked about during the session is that the virtual tour is one of the tools that kick off a student's experience of a campus. We would love to hear your thoughts on what makes your virtual tour special.  What does it showcase to really stand out from other schools that a student is checking out?

What do you do to destress?

I think we all have those days. You know what I mean, those crazy days, where it feels like you are running all over the place and forgot to eat lunch.  Especially after the bigger class starts, where you are making sure all the new students are doing OK and attendance is posting correctly on top of focusing on building the next start. So what are some of the things that you do to destress?   We just posted a new webinar into the library about workload paralysis impacting your attitude and how to overcome that.  ...

Questioning Elegance Module

Sam F. provided the following thoughts on the Questioning Elegance Module : "I think the questioning elegance module was enlightening to ask “Tell me about your situation” and listening to what they said. Then, we continue to uncover their needs and eventually move on with additional questions. This ends up helping students realize how to achieve their goals. I think it was strategic because it also helps students understand the expectations to achieve their goals. This way the counselor and student are on the same page. I also think that it holds the student accountable to understand ...

Attributes and Benefits Module

Brittany P. Commented:   "Great modules and very beneficial to my day to day. From the Attributes and Benefits module, the biggest and most important takeaway was understanding what makes our university stand out the most in order to be able to show prospective students how it can benefit them. When I truly understand the needs of a student, I can then assess how we can benefit them with our program. This has allowed me to ask more questions around what the students need from a school and make a list on our key attributes as a ...

"Communication Hierarchy" Question

Hi there,  So, similar to my question about the "Power of Questions" section, I was curious about how best to realistically apply the communication hierarchy within the context of student interactions that are much briefer than the context that this was apparently originally developed for (marriage counseling). I am graduate trained in marriage counseling, among other types, and was unfamiliar with this particular tool, but I do know that it would be unrealistic for us to be able to regularly reach higher level stages like the top of the pyramid (the bonding stage) with contact with students ...

"Power of Questions" Module Question

I know that in this module we discussed open vs. closed questions and the problems with asking "Why?," namely that it can come off as judgmental and damage rapport. I was wondering what recommendations you have for balancing open questions and avoiding why questions in a way that prioritizes rapport-building and a student-centered approach while also being mindful of the reality that we have limited time with students and too many open-ended questions can lead to us not getting to all the necessary (or even mandated) topics of discussion in a meeting. Thanks and looking forward to your reply!   ...
