One thing I always try to do is relate myself to the student so they know that they are not alone in how they are feeling or the thoughts that may go through their head. Many of the individuals that I talk to feel like their situation is something they are only going through when this is not the case. I try to encourage them as much as I can and let them know I am there to help every step of the journey. This helps them feel a little more confident knowing that someone is watching out for them and helping them succeed. Starting school for some of these individuals is a scary thing so I try to be as positive as I can with them and make the first process of school seem exciting and enjoyable, not scary.

Thank you for your post, Kirsten. Encouraging and motivating your students will go a long ways in providing them the confidence they need to succeed. I can't count the times a student has told me "thank you for not giving up on me."

A technique that can be used is to schedule an in face appointment on the times that the instructor and students are in class. This way they can see first hand how diverse the student population is. I also love to show case our bell and the pictures of the students we have ringing that bell. Adding a talk track that we don't have one type of student. Over the phone I add my experience of being a student at the age of 29 going to college for the first time as well. I give them an understanding that makes them feel that they are not alone and its never to late to go to school.

Thank you for your response, Edgar. It definitely helps if our students know that there are others in a similar situation, but have succeeded. Doesn't get any better when you can use yourself as a positive example!  Thanks again!

    Hi Marlee,

Thank you for your post. Great insight. The quicker you can establish trust and mutual interest, the more details your students will share.  Do you have any favorite questions you like to ask that seem to get your students to open up and discuss obstacles and challenges they face?
