Win of the Week

"We may be apart, but we are still together." I don't know who started this but it is so true.  Please take a moment and bring us together by sharing your 'Win of the Week'.  Share a student sucess story where something you did really helped them make a winning decision, or share some area where you felt  your own win.  I look forward to hearing from you all.

My win of the week is that I hit my first month's quota and I was able to enroll 3 students today to help them start the process towards their dream career!

My win for the week was found when I worked with a prospective student who encountered (what felt like) a wall when it came to moving forward toward her career goals. She had a plethora of obstacles. If I listed off everything that stood in her way you'd be amazed (prove not in default w/providing clearance letter, mail off a required FA doc, follow process to reset-fsa id, among other personal things to get in order). She went from discouraged to empowered ( we both did!), after our heart-to-heart and has now eliminated EVERY OBSTACLE that she was faced with. We now simply wait for her fsa-id email verification and she is set to enroll!! Helping her find a more determined and solution-focused mindset was a huge win of the week!

This week, I spoke to a mother who is currently going through a divorce. She is a single mother of two children. By talking to her, I helped her overcome her fear of moving forward in life and to not be afraid of starting school to give herself and children a better life.  She felt that she was too old and that school was not for her. I asked her what other options did she have to give a better future for her children. She was very hesitant in the beginning of our applicant interview to talk to me, but with listening and assuring her that it is never too late to start school, she is wanting to move forward to enrolling. I felt she just needed someone to understand her and be able to assure her that she was doing something for herself and she would not have to rely on anyone to take care of her.

I had an amazing win this week! I was able to work with my niece and show her the benefits of attending SJVC vs attending city college. I love working with my students but being able to help family is very special.  Her trust in me and my opinions brought us closer in our relationship. She told me that she had never seen me so passionate about a subject! I love her and want the best for her and attending SJVC was the best choice for me and will be for her.

My win of the week was a great conversation I had with a single mother of 7. She initially wanted nothing to do with a discussion regarding school, however after probing a bit more I was able to truly uncover her hidden fears. We were able to talk through some of her concerns and establish a great connection! She is recently out of a very long term abusive relationship and is now just starting to understand what it is to put herself (and her life goals) first. The conversation led to an interview, and she is now taking the next steps to move forward! This is probably my favorite thing about this job, I actually make a difference in the lives of those I speak with. When she enrolls next week it will be life changing for her, and this is something I'm so blessed to be apart of!!! Super win!

Ths is a great Win April!  It will be exciting to see her succeed.  Be sure your retention visits are on point and don't forget to ask for a PDL.  You helped her and now she can help someone else!

Andrew! Awesome accomplishment. Coming into the world of advising for high education is very rewarding as you have seen. One thing I have found is that we need to keep that same excitement even when the numbers are not there. We too have to remember our "why". "Why do we do the job we do"? This ultimately will keep you motivated and continue to push you into more success. Best of luck to you. There are a lot of good things ahead of you!

Thanks for this Jacob, I found this out this week.  Even though the numbers might not always be there the excitement still needs to be. Thanks for your post!

You are not kidding you are new Andrew, 3 weeks on the job I think.  I am so excited about your enthusiasm and drive to excel, this kind of mind set serves our students well as they need the energy and commitment of an advisor to help them in decision making.  Welcome to SJVC and admissions!

This is so true.  When you can change someone's life for the better, it is a wonderful feeling. We are there for the student because sometimes that student may not have someone there to encourage them.

Kristyn, I love the quote you added! And your "Win of the Week" is very heartfelt. This is an example of our "Why".  Why we do our job everyday and why our college is different from others.  Because of employees like you!
