Professional Goals - 2021

In order to achieve consistent success in the professional world, it's important to establish and set professional goals. There is no better time to review your professional goals than at the beginning of a new year. Throughout 2020 as we were all experiencing our strange new world, I made a commitment to read more professional books that would allow me to expand my knowledge and to grow professionally. I did select a few great books to read, such as "Good to Great" by Jim Collins, and "The Power of Positive Leadership" by Jon Gordon, both exceptional leadership books. I want to continue that trend in 2021, therefore, my goal  this year is to read at least one professional book per month that would allow me to continue to expand my knowledge base and improve my leadership skills. I would welcome any recommendations on professional books that you have come across and think would be beneficial. I can't wait to hear YOUR thoughts about YOUR goals and any recommendations you could provide on great books you would recommend.  What say you?

Hi Jim!

I know I am late responding to your question, but I wanted to share my 2021 Professional Goal. I am committing to listening to the LinkedIn Learning Videos that pertain to Leadership and Management. I have already listened to several and have really enjoyed their format. Like the Norton & Norris learning modules, LinkedIn Learning has broken down its lessons into smaller segments. Hence, they are easy for busy working students to find the time to listen to them and learn easily! I love the suggestions mentioned here on books to read! I will have to add reading them to my goals as well!

Thank you for prompting us to begin thinking about what our professional goals in 2021 will be!

Hi Dianna!

Thanks for sharing about the LinkedIn videos. Can I ask, was there one that you have watched recently that you thoroughly enjoyed?

Again, great goals for yourself for 2021!

Hi Jim,

I think for me, one thing I want to do this year is grow within my organization.  I know the recruiting side of Enrollment very well but I want to learn operations.  There is so much that goes on in operations but when one is in the trenches, one doesnt see it. A book that is very good to read is Fanatical Prospecting and Extreme Ownership.  These books are game changers and something I am doing too is also reading more books a month.  I have committed to reading two new books a month for 2021.  Jean, I love your goal of establishing more strategic partnerships in 2021.  I think that as we enter the decade of the 20s, Education is going to play a major role in our Democracy.  And companies are going to need for their employees to become more analytical and logical.

I love being in Higher Education.  I am constantly learning something new everyday.  I know for a fact that if EnrollmentAdmission reps dont work on their craft then they are going to be replaced.  Higher education is becoming more and more competitive by the day!

Thanks, Juan! You are correct; there are a lot of moving parts in the operations arena. Nothing happens in one department that doesn't impact another department making it a delicate balance. The guiding light for leaders in higher education should always be within keeping the student's best interest in mind. With that said, sometime what's in the best interest of the student isn't always accepted by the student which makes it even more challenging for leaders in higher ed. I'll definitely check out your book recommendation!

Excellent goal, Jim! I'm one of those folks who loves to learn - all the time! For this coming year, my professional goal is to seek out strategic partnerships. I feel the world of higher education has to work better together to thrive into the future!
