Learn from our Setbacks!

Our attitudes are influential, especially for those of us who are student facing.  And that means, that we can't let setbacks back bog us down.  Instead we should be learning from those setbacks.  Rather than feeling bad if we have fallen short, look back at the situation.  Think about your actions to see if there was anything that we could have done better.  How can we improve our performances to achieve better results?

We have all been there.  I have definitely fallen short as an admissions professional in the past.  Let me give you an example, I had recently been promoted to a new role and now had a region reporting to me and my region was struggling.  Our conversions weren't there even though our leads were plentiful.  So, we figured out instead of just asking what happened to "Susie Student" we decided to really focus on interview observations.  And those definitely take some time to complete, so it isn't always easiest to fit those into our daily schedule and continue to drive business.  But it was something visual where we could learn from our performances, so we made it a priority.  Receiving that review and HONEST feedback on areas where I could improve helped me to coach others on certain areas too.  Plus, it was definitely a confidence booster to see where my strengths were as well. The reviews prior to that had been "spotty" and not consistent but as our region saw the improvement we were all making, we committed to monthly observations moving forward which really helped all of us to keep our heads up and find the good even in our struggles.
