Getting a hold of your students?

What have you found that has been working to get a hold of your students?  Do you have effective text messaging strategies?  Or are emails engaging students right now?  Or do you feel like you have a voicemail that seems to be getting responses right now?  What about interactive technology (i.e. FaceTime/Web Chat/Skype/etc.)?  What seems to be working well for your institution right now? And to piggy back off that question, what time of day seems to be working well with making connections?

Today's student is definitely different than it was even 5 years ago, and technology has continued to evolve which is allowing us different ways to attempt to engage with our students but sometimes it be hard to reach them.  Personally, I'm glad that there are multiple ways because sometimes I feel like until you actually make that connection and find out which type of communication they prefer, I have to keep trying all different ways in different time zones.  And usually a trend starts to develop, I'd love to see some of your ideas that are working well right now.

So, please share your thoughts and ideas.

I think we'd all agree that the traditional and "historical" methods of reaching prospective students are outdated and far from effective. To me (and this depends on your student demographic), texting has become the most effective way to reach and communicate with prospective students. Emails are rarely if ever read. I think that in terms of strategies (and this is tried and tested within social media platforms), the more tailored and personal a message is, the more likely you'll get a response. Reference their specific interest, location, or any other detail you have. Then offer a call to action! Suggest a couple of times for you to call them to discuss their interests and motivations in more detail. These are all methods that work well and are effective!

Thank you for sharing!  I agree, texting seems to be the contact of choice, maybe because it takes a little pressure off because students get to read it, process it, and then respond to it.

And great point of offering the call to action, use text communication to actually set up a connection over the phone, face to face, virtual appointment etc. It is all about building comfort and trust to take the next step.
