I love the who is your support system question. It is so easy to support them in our four walls and we need to know if we are their main support outside of here or utilize this to continue to encourage who is out there supporting them.

My favorite question to ask is "How will you know when you've found the right college for you?". The response to this question says a lot about what a student finds valuable when selecting a college. For example, a student might say that he/she knows they have found the right college when the college is offering fast paced programs with flexible schedules. This tells me that a student is eager to get into a career and we should ask questions regarding their desire for flexible schedules. Do they have kids to worry about? Do they work during the day? It allows me to connect the dots with what we provide our students to what the student seeks in a college, providing the student with a clearer vision, that we offer what they are looking for.

So true!  I always feel like this question will guide me on what attributes to share/point out during the tour and sharing information portion of our interview.
Each question has a purpose for both the student and for the admissions person, and this one I feel like prepares me the best for making sure I can personalize the interview.

Jacob, Thank you for your feedback. You are 100% correct when you state their response says a lot about what they are looking for in a college. As Kelly G. alluded to, knowing the answer to this critical question will help tailor your interview to their needs. After all, that is what is important; maintaining the focus on the student's needs allows you to connect what's important to them to what your college can offer. Great job!

The one that I love to ask is What specifically is missing from your current situation that a college degree will give you? It provides insight on where the Prospective student is right now and where they want to be, painting a clear picture of the GAP. It also allows them to understand the benefits and opportunities that are aligned to completing a college degree. Also, it solidifies goals, strengthens motivation and reminds them why they want to go to school in the first place. It's also great to hear the initial reaction "WOW, I would feel so accomplished and proud of myself" after asking this question!

This is so true! This question allows the student to step back for a second and take a deeper look at where they are and what the want.  Hearing their "lightbulb" reaction is truly the best part of working in admissions!

Jonathan, great response! Student's have different motivations for why they are pursuing a college degree. The only way you will understand their motivation is to ASK THEM....and then LISTEN. It is important for us to stay in alignment with their motivations and also allows us to reinforce to them why they are taking this important step. Nice work!

My favorite is Tell me about your current situation because you learn so much about that person from one  little question.

I have to agree, I think this one opens up so many doors and allows the student to just feel comfortable sharing information. It is definitely my favorite as well!

Brandy, you are 100% correct! This is such as an important question, particularly when you are trying to build mutual interest that will enable you to bond with your student. When asking this question, you will also want to look for opportunities to ask secondary questions for clarification to make sure you have a complete picture of their current situation and what will have to change in order for them to be a successful student. Nice work!
